5 Challenges People Encounter with Meditation

Similarly to you, I faced various challenges when I began my meditation practice back in 1980. Although these challenges can still arise from time to time, through years of practice, learning, and refinement of my meditation techniques, I have developed the ability to work with and overcome these challenges.

What are some of the biggest challenges that people may encounter while meditating:

  1. Difficulty in focusing: Many people find it hard to concentrate and quiet their minds during meditation. They may struggle with racing thoughts, distractions, or restlessness, which can make it challenging to achieve a state of relaxation and inner calm. See my video answer to this.
  2. Physical discomfort: Sitting for extended periods in one position can be physically uncomfortable for some people. They may experience pain, stiffness, or discomfort in their neck, back, or legs, which can be a distraction during meditation. See my video answer to this.
  3. Impatience and frustration: People often expect to experience immediate results from meditation, but it can take time and practice to achieve the desired benefits. It’s common to become impatient or frustrated when progress seems slow, which can make it difficult to maintain a regular meditation practice. See my video answer to this.
  4. Lack of motivation and discipline: Establishing a regular meditation routine requires discipline and motivation. Many people struggle with maintaining consistency in their practice, especially when they don’t see immediate results or when life gets busy. See my video answer to this.
  5. Dealing with emotions: Meditation can bring up difficult emotions, such as anxiety, sadness, or anger. Learning how to sit with these emotions and allow them to pass without becoming overwhelmed can be challenging for some people. See my video answer to this.
